Trump’s Atrocious Raid on Capitol Hill and its Consequences
During the counting of electoral college votes on capitol hill this week something unimaginable happened. A mob of aggravated Trump supporters marched onto capitol hill and proceeded to take over the halls of congress with brutal force. The chaotic event resulted in a complete lockdown of congress temporarily and a security disaster that could have killed multiple key members of government. Washington, DC had to establish a curfew and bring out a massive, combined police force in order to stop the riot. This event was completely unprecedented because of the fact it was spurred by a sitting president mad about losing the national election.
The main reason why this heinous riot occurred is that President Trump had held a rally and tweeted about marching down Pennsylvania Avenue to stop the unfair “stealing” of his win. Trump demanded that he won the election and that people needed to stop the shenanigans immediately. This spurred thousands of his supporters to march to Capitol Hill and violently swarm the houses of congress. The riot was being used as a last-ditch effort to prevent Joe Biden from becoming the president-elect and Trump gladly condoned the use of violence over democracy.
The total amount of damage done in the raid on Capitol Hill was immense. The human toll included 4 civilian casualties and over 50 police officers wounded. Capitol Hill was left in complete shambles and many items from the iconic building were stolen by spurred political supporters. Hallways of the building were turned into Instagram tools for the political mob. It looked like a hurricane had swept through the building with the sheer amount of destruction left in the wake of the angry mob. By the end of the night the protest had devolved into a radical militia that held armed positions within the halls of congress.
Trump’s sponsoring of this ransacking of Capitol Hill has immediately drawn backlash from a variety of important figures. Many previous donors to Trump’s campaign have gone completely silent immediately after the news broke and will not be giving donations to the president’s 2022 campaign. The husband of Georgia Senate runoff candidate Kelly Loeffler has publicly denounced the president’s actions within hours of the incident. Some former republican advisors have openly called Trump out for behaving like a child and directly impeding the constitutional government. Several influential businesses have issued internal memo’s condemning the riot and completely disassociate themselves from Trump.
The future implications of Trump’s decision to sponsor an all-out riot on Capitol Hill are immense. In the future Trump’s campaign will have to find a new suite of business donors if they want a chance in 2024. Congressional republicans have already started distancing themselves from Trump which will make Trump significantly less politically influential in future politics. Moderate voters in 2024 will have a direct unprecedented violent incident to link to the possible candidate when they go to the ballot box which will lower his popularity by a large margin. Finally, Trump has officially isolated himself from all political allies for the near future and probably for good.
The riot on Capitol Hill is not just a political disaster for Trump, but a direct affront on the foundation of the United States. This will go down in history as a dark day for American democracy and an key moment in the era of a divided United States.
